Luca Gallelli was born in Naples on November 03 1973 and he graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Reggio Calabria, Italy on 1997. In the same year he started the PhD program in Pharmacology and Toxycology (Chemiotherapy) at the Second University of Naples, Italy. During this period he studied the lung function in vivo and in vitro models. In 2000 he won a travel grant by SIF (Italian Society of Pharmacology) for moving to another country. Thanks to this,  he was from March to September of the same year, in London at the Department of Pharmacology  King’s College London (directed by Prof C.P. Page), carrying out researches on bronchial hyperresponsiveness. He obtained the PhD degree in 2001 and started the specialization in Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Catanzaro focusing on the safety and the efficacy of drugs in patients, but the interest on lung function in animal models and in cell culture (fibroblasts, bronchial epithelial cells, cancer cells) never stopped. To improve the knowledge of the effects of drugs in animal model, he was a visiting researcher at the Safety Pharmacology at the Nerviano Medical Science, Italy (from 04 September to 12 November 2004) and 3 days in November 2004 at the Department of Pulmonary Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine Paris Ouest, Francia (directed by Prof C. Advenier). This gave him the possibility to be appreciated by Prof Advenier who extended Luca's visiting into 2005 from April to August. In 2005 he obtained the degree as Specialist in Clinical Pharmacology at the School of Medicine University of Catanzaro. From December 2005 to June 2006 he was Attending Physician in Clinical Pharmacology Unit, Mater Domini Hospital, Catanzaro, Italy and actually by
2007  he is Assistant Professor in Pharmacology, School of Medicine University of Catanzaro and Attending Physician in Clinical Pharmacology Unit, Mater Domini Hospital, Catanzaro, Italy. From 2007 to date, he is a Professor in Pharmacology at the University of Catanzaro, Italy, for student in nurse and medicine as well as for the Specialization in Pharmacology, Respiratory Medicine and Forensic Medicine.

Research Interest

Pharmacology of Lung function: study of bronchomotor tone; role of pollutants and allergens in asthmatic pathogenesis; identification of targets for therapy of pulmonary diseases; study of the signal transduction pathways involved in cell proliferation, apoptosis and drug response. Studies: in vivo (mice, guinea pigs, rabbits) in vitro (isolated organs of guinea pig and human bronchi), human cell cultures (primary bronchial epithelial cells and lung fibroblasts, bronchial adenocarcinoma cells of squamous and mucoepidermoid lung cancer).
Clinical Pharmacology: therapeutic drug monitoring of anticonvulsants, cardiovascular and respiratory drugs, immunosuppressants, methotrexate, antimicrobial drugs and drugs of abuse in several organic samples (urine, blood). Pharmacokinetic studies. Assessment of the risk of drug interactions in patients. Association between adverse reactions and drug used. Pharmacovigilance: prospective and retrospective studies of adverse reactions in the population. Correlations between adverse drug reactions and genetic and family habitat.
