Biography:
I have 11 years of experience as a medical doctor and another 22 years as a neuroscience researcher. I have a broad background and expertise in both basic and clinical neurobiological diseases. My research has been focused on exploring the mechanisms of cerebral ischemia and reperfusion induced brain damage, especially under diabetic/hyperglycemic conditions, and investigating novel therapeutic approaches for treating neurodegenerative diseases using cell culture models, animal models and transgenic approaches. As a PI on several foundation and NIH–funded grants, I have established collaborations with Dr. Pak Chan in Stanford University, Dr. Craig Warden in UC-Davis and Dr. David Warner in Duke University. I also have strong ties with several universities internationally and attract scholars to work in my lab. Research results have published in high impact journals such as Diabetes, Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism, Stroke, and PLoS One. My lab routinely uses in vitro and in vivo hypoxic/ischemic models; detects cell survival and death pathway using qPCR, DNA array, gel electrophoresis, histology, immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopy; and measures mitochondrial function, complex activities, mitochondrial biogenesis and dynamics.
