Mariusz Joseph Dyląg was born on January 8, 1980, in Gorlice, (Lesser Poland), Poland. He was educated at Martin Kromer High School (1st LO) in Gorlice. In 1999 he began studies in biology with specialization in microbiology at the University of Wroclaw. In 2002 he graduated a Bachelor of Science degree. During the second degree studies he realized an Master thesis entitled ,,Mycological evaluation of the selected rooms and books in the library of the Institute of Genetics and Microbiology of the University of Wroclaw” under the supervision of Mrs. Margaret Bień Ph.D. The knowledge and experience in the field of mycology he has gained under the supervision of Dr. Bień constituted a good foundation for further scientific development. Immediately after graduate studies in 2004 he began to work as a junior assistant in Specialist Hospital of H. Klimontowicz in Gorlice, Poland. As a laboratorian in the Medical Microbiological Laboratory he was responsible for the complex microbiological diagnostics, especially mycological examinations and diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. A turning point for the further scientific development was the return to Wroclaw in November 2005 and employment in Department and Clinic of Dermatology, Venerology and Allergology, Wroclaw Medical University headed by Professor Eugeniusz Baran, M.D., Ph.D. As a referent and senior assistant was responsible for mycological diagnostics in Mycological Laboratory. After completion of the course organized by the Polish Center for Research and Certification (in Polish: PCBC) he was also responsible for quality control in the laboratory. Years of working in the Clinic (November 2005- December 2008) were very fruitful and resulted in common scientific publications, conference presentations, patents and research projects. Knowledge and experience gained under the supervision of Professor Eugeniusz Baran, the leading figures of the Polish mycology constituted the not overestimated value for further scientific work. Having already luggage of the professional experience in October 2008 Mariusz Dyląg started his doctoral studies at Faculty of Biological Sciences of the University of Wroclaw under the supervision of Professor Stanisław Ułaszewski Ph.D. He graduated a Ph.D. degree in June 2013 based on doctoral disertation entitled ,,Searching for effective fungicides within the organic compounds of tin, selenium and halogenated carboxylic acids”. Since 2013 he is employed as an adjunct Assistant Professor in Department of Genetics, Institute of Genetics and Microbiology, University of Wroclaw where is responsible for lectures and laboratory classes on Mycology and Medical mycology. Dr. Dyląg has been working very interactively with Professor Stanisław Ułaszewski as his closest associate in the Department of Genetics and also with Professor Peter Pedersen and Dr. Young Ko, researchers from Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, USA). Actually, they continue productive research not only related to target cancer cell’s but also dedicated to the effective killing of pathogenic fungi by novel potential drug 3-bromopyruvate. His subject of interest is widely understood mycology. Actually Dr. Dyląg is a member of International Society for Human and Animal Mycology (ISHAM), Polish Association of Building Mycologist (in Polish: PSMB), Polish Society of Microbiologists (in Polish: PTM) and Polish Mycological Society (in Polish: PTM).

Research Interest

My scientific passion is broadly defined mycology. In the circle of my interests are not only fungi which are pathogenic for humans and animals but also phytopathogenic fungi. I'm interested in biology and ecology of pathogenic fungi as well as in the mechanisms of pathogenesis. In the sphere of my interests also is the biodiversity in the kingdom of fungi. I spend a lot of time photographing fungi, both those observed under the microscope, as well as macroscopically visible. Particular value for me also have high quality photographs of various clinical cases with fungal etiology. Actually I am the most engaged in looking for potential antimycotics with high biological safety profile and therapeutic effectiveness. In the mentioned area particularly I am interested in the mechanisms of action of potential drugs and different phenotypes of susceptibility/resistance toward these compounds.
