Biography:

After earning a Ph.D. from a founding NIH funded Genetics Program at Duke University in 1975, I moved to the University of California San Francisco for 22 years where I advanced to Associate Professor in three departments. When first offered I earned board certification in Clinical Cytogenetics (1978) and Clinical Molecular Genetics (1993) by the American College of Medical Genetics, a member board of the American Medical Associations and signed 5,000 clinical cases in both specialties.  Then I directed the Molecular Genetics Laboratory at Boston University where I added 32 disease tests and signed 22,000 patient cases referred from every state in the Union and every country in the Western Hemisphere.  As Director of Cytogenetics, Akron Children’s Hospital, I have signed >20,000 Clinical Cytogenetics cases. I have taught Molecular Genetics, Cytogenetics, and Ethics to Northeast Ohio Medical University students as a Pathology Professor.  I authored 99 peer reviewed publications and 15 chapters with 278 coauthors in mapping, identification, and diagnosis of genetic disease that were cited 1844 times in 1660 publications by 6236 coauthors [Microsoft Academic Search; 6674 citations in ResearchGate].  I gave 65 invited presentations in 20 states and 5 foreign countries and previously received >$2,000,000 in contracts and grants. I trained 19 fellows from 10 countries who co-authored peer reviewed publications and trained 9 American Board of Medical Genetics certified specialists in Clinical Molecular Genetics or Clinical Cytogenetics. I served on the American College of Medical Genetics Committee for Maternal Screening.  .  I hold 6 patents in genetic disease identification and diagnosis including identifying the Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT1B) disease gene (U.S. Patents 5,723,593.  5,876,927). and Optimizing Genome-Wide Mutation Analysis of Chromosomes and Genes.by testing the most Frequent Diseases Worldwide (U.S. Patent 8,548,747).

Research Interest: My research interests include the entire field of genetics from all organisms from viruses and bacteria to humans, mammals, terrestrial animals, and all living things in water.  I have also published in all areas of molecular genetics and cytogenetics as well as designing and installing a triple laser sorter that served 100 hours per week for 5 years under my direction. I mapped the second 60 human genes in 18 months, developed triple color FISH, initially applied PCR clinically, and trained professionals in medical genetics.
