Marcello Ciaccio is Professor of Clinical Biochemistry and, since 2009, Director of Section of Clinical Biochemistry and Clinical Molecular Medicine of the Department of Biopathology and Medical and Biotechnologies (Di.Bi.Med) at the University of Palermo. Moreover, since 2013, he is Director of the Complex Operating Unit of Analysis of Laboratory Medicine - CoreLab of the A.O.U.P. of Palermo. In 1982, Prof. Ciaccio graduated in Medicine and Surgery at University of Palermo and he specialized in endocrinology at University of Firenze. In 1990 he became Professor of Clinical Biochemistry and he currently teaches in several degree courses. He is also Director of graduate school of Clinical Biochemistry at University of Palermo. He is involved in several research scientific projects such as “Study of biochemistry and clinical biochemistry alterations in Down Syndrome”, “Validation of genetic tests for inherited diseases of socio-health relevance in Sicily” and “Study of clinical biochemistry and molecular genetics profiles in patients with thrombophilic diathesis”. Prof. Ciaccio has been invited to take part in numerous national and international conferences both as moderator and as speaker. In January 2016 he is being the Chair of the Italian Society of Clinical Biochemistry and Clinical Molecular Biology (SIBioC). He has published over 300 scientific papers and he is reviewer of several scientific journals in the field of the Clinical Biochemistry, such as “Clinical Biochemistry”, “Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine“, “Journal of Translational Medicine”, “BioFactors”, “Biochemia Medica”, “European Journal of Clinical Nutrition”, “Journal of Pediatric Biochemistry“, “Cochrane Review” and “Biologia”.
Research Interest
The main interests in research are: role of hormonal receptors in neoplastic disease; metabolism of steroid hormones in neoplastic disease; HPLC techniques; estrogens and their metabolites in rat brain; role of un-satured fat acid in cAMP formation in the retina; tumoral markers; inhibitory action of some aminoacids in the brain; function of vitamin A in the retina; cardiac protection from Radicalic Species of Oxygen damage; antioxidant role of vitamin A; effects of retinoic acid of TAT activity; arguments in the topic of Nutritional Biochemistry. In particular, development of Nutritional protocols in Down Syndrome subjects. Recently the attention has been focused on molecular analysis of genes involved in several pathologies, including neuro-logic deficiencies, neurodegeneration and cardiovascular diseases.
